Ireland’s Finn Lynch made an outstanding start to the 2026 ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship, ending the opening day at the top of the standings on home waters in Dún Laoghaire.
A world-class fleet of 141 sailors took to Dublin Bay for the first three races of the championship, hosted jointly by the Royal St George Yacht Club and the National Yacht Club.
The sailors faced a light easterly breeze at the beginning of the day, with conditions strengthening as racing progressed. A shifting wind required the course to be adjusted for the final race, while the later fleets also encountered rain as the breeze continued to build.
Lynch, representing the National Yacht Club, opened his campaign with a race victory before adding second and fourth-place finishes. With one discard applied after three races, he finished the day on three net points.
Italy’s Attilio Borio is level with Lynch on three points after recording second and first-place finishes in his opening two races. Lynch holds the overall lead on countback.
Germany’s Ole Schweckendiek and Hong Kong’s Nicholas Halliday are next in the standings on four points, followed by Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic, Korea’s Jeemin Ha and Hungary’s Jonatán Vadnai, all on five points.
Reigning Olympic champion Matt Wearn of Australia ended the opening day in ninth place after finishes of fifth, sixth and second in his fleet.
Ireland’s Ewan McMahon began with a strong eighth-place finish and sits 48th overall.
Fiachra McDonnell and Bobby Driscoll are also representing Ireland in a fleet featuring many of the leading ILCA 7 sailors in the world.
The six-day championship continues on Dublin Bay before concluding on Sunday, 30 August.
