Eve McMahon 12th as Charlotte Rose Leads After Opening Day
With the ILCA 6 Women’s World Championship taking place just outside our door in Dún Laoghaire, Viking Marine is following the racing throughout the week, with particular attention on the four Irish sailors competing against the world’s best.
Ireland’s Eve McMahon has made a steady start to her home World Championship, ending the opening day in 12th place after three qualifying races on Dublin Bay.
A full three-race programme was completed across the Blue and Yellow fleets, giving the 108 competitors a discard after the opening day. The racing produced a tightly grouped leaderboard, with only seven points separating the first 11 sailors.
McMahon recorded sixth-, fourth- and eighth-place finishes in the Blue fleet. With her eighth discarded, the Howth Yacht Club sailor is on ten net points, seven behind the joint leaders.
American Charlotte Rose leads the championship after finishes of first, second and second in the Yellow fleet. She is level on three points with Belgium’s two-time world champion Emma Plasschaert, who recorded first, second and third in the Blue fleet.
Denmark’s Anna Munch is third on six points, while Hungary’s Mária Érdi, Britain’s Hannah Snellgrove, New Zealand’s Greta Pilkington and Australia’s Mara Stransky are all on seven points.
Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Annalise Murphy also made a solid return to World Championship competition. Sailing on her home waters, the National Yacht Club sailor recorded two 11th-place finishes and a 14th, leaving her 25th overall on 22 net points.
Sienna Wright is 49th after finishes of 35th, 15th and 24th, while Lucy Ives is 87th following her first three races.
Defending world champion Louise Cervera of France is 21st after the opening day, while Poland’s 2025 silver medallist Agata Barwińska sits tenth.
The Qualifying Series continues on Tuesday, with the fleet still closely matched and plenty of opportunity for movement throughout the standings.
