Eve McMahon 17th as Charlotte Rose Extends World Championship Lead
With the ILCA 6 Women’s World Championship taking place just outside our door in Dún Laoghaire, Viking Marine is following the racing throughout the week, with particular attention on the four Irish sailors competing against the world’s best.
American Charlotte Rose has extended her lead following the second day of racing on Dublin Bay, while Ireland’s Eve McMahon is now 17th overall.
Two further qualifying races were completed across the Blue and Yellow fleets, bringing the championship total to five. With one discard applied, the closely matched international fleet again produced significant movement throughout the standings.
McMahon added 20th and 21st place finishes to her three top-ten results from the opening day. With her 21st discarded, the Howth Yacht Club sailor is on 38 net points.
Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Annalise Murphy enjoyed the strongest Irish result of the day. She followed a 13th place with fifth in the second race, moving from 25th to 19th overall on 40 points.
Rose won both Yellow fleet races to take a two-point championship lead. Her results across the opening five races are first, second, second, first and first, leaving her on five net points after discard.
Belgium’s two-time world champion Emma Plasschaert is second on seven points after finishing eighth and first in the Blue fleet.
Denmark’s Anna Munch remains third on ten points after adding two second-place finishes. Australia’s Mara Stransky is fourth, with reigning European champion Mária Érdi of Hungary fifth.
Dutch sailor Maxime Jonker is sixth, followed by Britain’s Hannah Snellgrove, New Zealand’s Greta Pilkington, Italy’s Chiara Benini Floriani and Argentina’s Luciana Cardozo.
Defending world champion Louise Cervera of France moved to 23rd overall after recording 14th and third in today’s races.
Ireland’s Sienna Wright is 55th overall following 40th- and 23rd-place finishes, while Lucy Ives is 88th.
The Qualifying Series continues on Wednesday, with Rose holding the early advantage but the battle for positions behind her still extremely close.
