Eve McMahon Climbs to 11th as Emma Plasschaert Takes the Lead
With the ILCA 6 Women’s World Championship taking place just outside our door in Dún Laoghaire, Viking Marine is following the racing throughout the week, with particular attention on the four Irish sailors competing against the world’s best.
Ireland’s Eve McMahon has moved to 11th overall after the opening race of the Elimination Series, while Belgium’s Emma Plasschaert now leads the championship.
One race was completed in each of the newly formed Gold and Silver fleets, bringing the championship total to six races.
Following the five preliminary races, the 108 sailors were divided according to their overall standings. The leading 54 now compete in the Gold fleet, with the remaining 54 racing in Silver. Their existing scores carry forward, and two days of Elimination Series racing will determine the standings ahead of the championship’s concluding stage.
McMahon finished seventh in the Gold fleet. With one discard applied, the Howth Yacht Club sailor climbs six places to 11th overall on 45 net points.
Plasschaert added a second-place finish to take the championship lead on nine points. Overnight leader Charlotte Rose finished eighth and moves to second overall on 13 points.
Australia’s Mara Stransky remains third on 34 points, narrowly ahead of Britain’s Matilda Nicholls on 35 and Poland’s Agata Barwińska on 38.
The Netherlands’ Roos Wind won the opening Gold fleet race and moved to 14th overall. Britain’s Nicholls finished third, while Italy’s Emma Mattivi placed fourth and climbed into the top ten.
Annalise Murphy endured a difficult opening race in the Gold fleet, finishing 51st. The National Yacht Club sailor is now 32nd overall on 91 points.
In the Silver fleet, Sienna Wright finished ninth and moved to 56th overall. Lucy Ives recorded a seventh-place finish and climbed to 77th.
The Elimination Series continues on Thursday, with McMahon well positioned among the leading group and further opportunities for movement across both fleets.
